Mahone Bay Nova Scotia
Mahone Bay Nova Scotia is a small town located on the northwest shore of Mahone Bay along the South Shore of Nova Scotia in Lunenburg County. It can serve as an ideal base for exploring the stretch of Nova Scotia coastline known as the "South Shore."
It is considered to be one of the most attractive towns in Nova Scotia, and the view across the harbour of its three prominent churches (Anglican, Lutheran, and United) has appeared on many postcards and calendars. The town is filled with upscale shops and restaurants which are almost all designed to appeal to the tourist trade.
Known for a history of wooden boat building, it was the main industry of Mahone Bay in its earlier years. The Settler's Museum explains and shows this history in detail. The annual Mahone Bay Classic Boat Festival celebrates the rich wooden boat heritage of Nova Scotia's South Shore. The town was first settled in 1754, by German, and Swiss settlers who founded the town and Township of Lunenburg in 1753. The old cemetery, known as Bayview Cemetery, has some 18th-century slate gravestones engraved in German. Located at the edge of a bay of more than 100 islands, Mahone Bay Nova Scotia is a treasury of history, culture and 19th century architecture. As mentioned above, the charming main street has a wide variety of art galleries, specialty shops and living museums - all within an easy stroll.
Imaginative restaurants, cozy small inns, and a local golf course highlight the peacefulness and natural beauty of Mahone Bay, making this town an ideal vacation jumping off point. There are miles of local trails for hiking and you can kayak or take a boat tour of the islands, or visit the local museum for a brief history of the town. At Peggy's Cove it's the lighthouse that serves as the main focal point. In next-door Mahone Bay it's the 3 Churches and the quaint town.
